The charming arithmetic origins of sliding tile games.

The creation of a modern classic

In early 2014, Asher Vollmer and artist Greg Wohlwend released Threes!, an exquisitely crafted sliding puzzle where 1 and 2 combine into 3, and subsequent identical numbers merge into higher multiples. Each tile had its own voice, personality, and adorable facial expressions.

Shortly after, open-source clones emerged, chief among them Gabriele Cirulli's 2048, which replaced the 1+2 mechanic with pure binary doubling (2+2=4). Both games became global phenomena and sparked a renaissance in sliding tile puzzles.

Contrasting the mathematical rhythms

While Threes! has a tighter, more constrained probability curve that requires careful wall buffering, 2048 offers a flowing, rhythmic merge chain that allows experienced players to reach staggering milestones like 4096 and 8192.

Both games are prime examples of the beauty of offline casual gaming: simple mathematical rules creating infinite strategic depth.
